WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will deliver a speech on immigration on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. (1830 GMT), the White House said on Wednesday.

Republican senators said on Tuesday that Trump would describe in the speech how immigration laws should be overhauled.

Trump, a Republican, has been working on a proposal to increase the number of visas for highly skilled workers seeking to move to the United States and to claw back other types of visas.

The plan is unlikely to pass Congress, as the Democratic Party controls the House of Representatives.

Trump has made immigration a focus of his presidency, pledging to build a wall along the southern border with Mexico. After lawmakers did not allocate funds for the wall, the president declared a national emergency in February to reprogram funds for the project.
